Pathways and Walkways
Paths are narrow, edged on both sides and used in the same places every day. Setting out the route is the first task, and it decides the rest.
Setting out the route
The line of the path is set out from the entrance it serves, following the route people already take. Width and finished level are fixed at this stage, including where the path meets a driveway, a step or a lawn edge.
Preparing the ground
The route is opened to the agreed depth and the ground beneath is compacted. Where a path runs alongside a wall, a fence or planting, the edging is set in during this stage so the surface has something to hold against.
Laying the path surface
The surface is laid along the prepared route, working from one end to the other to keep the joints even. Falls are gentle and continuous so the path does not hold water, and the finished level is checked where it meets the surrounding ground.
